Today, various venues are rented for social activities, Ramadan iftar gatherings, engagements and weddings, holidays, or religious programs. In such places, kitchen utensils (forks, spoons, glasses, plates, pots, etc.) are often available that have previously been used by others and may have been in contact with non-halal foods. This may raise concerns, particularly for individuals who are sensitive about maintaining a halal lifestyle. The same applies to second-hand kitchen utensils.
This issue can be understood in light of a hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him). When the companions asked whether it was permissible to use vessels belonging to non-Muslims in which pork had been cooked or wine had been consumed, he replied:
“If you find other vessels, then eat and drink from them. If you do not find others, then wash their vessels with water and then eat and drink from them.” (Abu Dawud, Etime 46; Bukhari, Aqiqa 4; Ibn Majah, Sayd 3)
The first part of the hadith encourages caution when possible, while the second part permits the use of such vessels after cleaning in cases of necessity. Accordingly, even if non-halal food had previously been prepared or consumed in such utensils, thorough washing renders them clean and usable.
To elaborate further:
1) In small gatherings or family events with few participants, it is recommended—out of precaution—to bring one’s own utensils if possible. However, this is not obligatory. If it causes difficulty or inconvenience, the cleaned utensils provided at the venue may be used.
2) In large-scale events with many participants, there is no religious objection to using the kitchen utensils provided by the rented venue, provided they have been properly washed by hand or in a dishwasher. Therefore, there is no need for unnecessary hardship by bringing personal utensils.
In conclusion, whether for travel, holidays, religious programs, weddings, or iftar gatherings, kitchen utensils in rented venues (homes, wedding halls, restaurants, etc.) may be used if they have been thoroughly cleaned. The same applies to second-hand kitchen utensils
