Since the exact nature of the work and its role within the banking system are not fully known, it is difficult to provide a definitive ruling. However, it can generally be stated that engaging directly in prohibited (haram) activities such as interest (riba) is religiously impermissible. Likewise, supporting or facilitating such activities is also considered impermissible.

If a job is directly part of a non-legitimate (non-halal) line of business and contributes to the production or execution of a prohibited service or product, it falls under the ruling of “assisting in sinful activity.” This is based on the Qur’anic principle: “Cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and transgression” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:2).

However, if the work is not directly part of such a process and instead involves providing a general product or service that can be used for both lawful and unlawful purposes, then the responsibility lies with the end user. In such cases, the provider is not held accountable.

For example, if you develop a general-purpose product or software that is publicly available and not specifically designed for unlawful use, there is no issue if others choose to use it improperly. However, if you specifically design, maintain, or support systems for institutions engaged in impermissible activities, this may be considered direct assistance and should be avoided.

Another important factor is your position within the organization. If you are in a decision-making role, greater caution is required. If you are simply an employee without authority over the acceptance of work and are obliged to perform assigned tasks, you should try to avoid questionable duties as much as possible. If avoidance is not feasible, this may be regarded as a widespread and unavoidable circumstance in modern times. In such a case, one should limit involvement to necessity and continue seeking alternative opportunities.

In summary, one should avoid work that directly supports prohibited activities. In the IT field, the ruling depends on the nature of the work, the individual’s role within the organization, and the level of choice they have.
