For the meat of animals slaughtered by the People of the Book to be considered halal, the slaughter must be done with a sharp blade from beneath the chin, cutting the main arteries. If, however, the slaughterer mentions the name of anyone other than Allah during the act, the meat becomes haram. Opinions differ on whether mentioning Allah’s name (tesmiyah) is obligatory: the Hanafi and Hanbali schools require it, while the Shafi’i and Maliki schools do not.
