According to the Hanafi school of thought, it is not permissible to eat sea creatures such as mussels, oysters, and lobsters that are not in the form of fish. The Hanafi scholars consider sea creatures outside the fish category to be “impure” (habâis), citing the verse from Surah Al-A’raf (7:157): “He has forbidden for you impure things.”
In the Hanafi school, all fish-like sea animals are permissible to eat, but creatures such as mussels, oysters, and lobsters are excluded and thus deemed impermissible. The Hanafi scholars classify these creatures as inherently impure, and therefore, their consumption is not allowed.
