According to the Hanafi school of thought, it is not permissible to eat sea creatures that do not have the form of fish. This means that while fish of various kinds, such as flounder, carp, dolphin, and eel, are permissible to eat, animals like mussels, oysters, lobsters, and crabs are not.
The Hanafi scholars base this on the Quranic verse, “And He has forbidden for you impure things” (Surah Al-A’raf, 7:157). Since squid is not classified as a fish, it falls under the same ruling as mussels, and therefore, according to the Hanafi school, it is not permissible to eat.
