When Abu Musa asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about bit’ made from honey and mizr made from corn and barley, the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied,

“I prohibit everything that intoxicates to the point of hindering prayer” (Muslim, “Drinks”, 70; Bukhari, “Military Expeditions”, 60; Abu Dawood, “Drinks”, 5; Nasa’i, “Drinks”, 23). The Messenger of Allah clarified that everything intoxicating is haram, including the gubeyra drink made by the Habashis from corn (Abu Dawood, “Drinks”, 4).

In a hadith narrated by Deylem al-Himyeri, when asked about drinks made from wheat for increasing resistance in cold climates, the Prophet (peace be upon him) inquired whether these drinks intoxicated and upon receiving a positive response said, “Then avoid them” (Abu Dawood, “Drinks”, 5). Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) stated that no intoxicating drink could be considered halal (Nasa’i, “Drinks”, 48).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated, “What intoxicates in large amounts, a small amount of it is also haram” (Abu Dawood, “Drinks”, 5; Tirmidhi, “Drinks”, 3; Ibn Maja, “Drinks”, 10; Nasa’i, “Drinks”, 25), indicating that even a small amount of intoxicating drinks is haram. A narration in Abu Dawood states, “Every intoxicating thing is haram. Even a handful of something that causes intoxication is haram” (Abu Dawood, “Drinks”, 5).

In a hadith narrated by Ibn Umar, it is emphasized that one should avoid everything that bubbles due to fermentation, indicating that even a small amount of intoxicating drinks is haram (Nasa’i, “Drinks”, 48).
