In Islam, the fundamental principle regarding food and drink is that the original state of things is permissibility (ibaha). This principle is articulated in Article 5 of the Mecelle, which states, “The original state of things is permissibility.” In other words, apart from specific items that have been prohibited, all foods and drinks are generally permissible. To determine whether something is halal (permissible) or not, one must check if there is a clear evidence (from the Qur’an, Sunnah, consensus, or analogy) that declares it haram (forbidden). Therefore, unless a food or drink is harmful or contrary to Islamic teachings, the basic rule is that everything created for human benefit is allowed for consumption.
