Is the obligation to fast waived for individuals of sound mind who have reached an advanced age?

Those who have reached an advanced age and no longer possess the physical strength or health required to fast are not required to observe the fast, given the permanence of their condition. Instead, they must give fidyah for each day they are unable to fast.

Apart from such cases, however, advanced age in itself does not nullify the obligation of fasting. Elderly individuals who still retain the capacity to endure the fast remain legally obligated to observe it.
