In Islam, alcohol consumption is prohibited, and the use of alcohol-containing substances is generally discouraged. Consequently, the permissibility of using toothpaste with alcohol is evaluated in light of this principle.
The alcohol found in toothpaste is usually of a different type and is not intended for consumption but for oral hygiene and dental cleaning. Most toothpastes contain not ethanol (ethyl alcohol) but types of polyalcohols, which are chemically distinct from intoxicating alcohols.
Some scholars consider toothpaste with polyalcohol permissible for oral hygiene and dental care. However, to uphold piety (taqwa) and maintain sensitivity towards alcohol-related issues, it is recommended to opt for alcohol-free toothpastes whenever they are available.
