In Islam, responding to invitations is a Sunnah, yet the source of the host’s income should be considered. If the majority of the host’s income is lawful, accepting their offerings is permissible. However, if it is known that most of their income is unlawful, it is advisable not to accept the offering unless it is specifically confirmed to be lawful. In cases where the source of their wealth is uncertain, it is generally acceptable to assume goodwill and accept their offering. Additionally, if rejecting the offering would harm personal relations, one might give a gift of equal value in return to balance the interaction. When attending such gatherings, it’s crucial to ensure that no haram items, such as alcohol, are present. If attendance is necessary, one may partake with a bismillah in the least objectionable items available.
