Fidyah refers to a compensatory act of charity given by those who are unable to fast due to a chronic condition or old age, and for whom making up the missed fasts at a later time is not expected. It consists of feeding one poor person two meals for each day of fasting that is missed.
If the individual upon whom fidyah is due lacks the financial means to fulfill it, she should seek forgiveness and mercy from Allah. However, if her husband is financially capable, it becomes incumbent that this amount be paid. Beyond this, while her sons, grandchildren, or other relatives are under no strict obligation to discharge the fidyah on her behalf, should they do so, it would constitute a virtuous and commendable act.
