The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“My community will remain upon goodness so long as they hasten to break the fast and delay the pre-dawn meal (sahur).”
(Abū Dāwūd, Ṣawm, 21; Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, 2/450)
Accordingly, it is more virtuous (afḍal) to delay sahur as much as reasonably possible, up until shortly before imsāk (the beginning of the fast).
This recommendation reflects the Prophet’s compassion and mercy toward his community. For some individuals, enduring hunger for extended periods can be particularly difficult. Delaying sahur helps reduce the length of fasting time without food and thus eases the physical burden of the fast.
