According to the Hanefi school of thought, one of the obligatory actions in prayer is qiyam (standing). Qiyam means standing while performing obligatory prayers, and it is required for those who are able to do so. If a person cannot stand due to health reasons, they can pray while sitting.
If there is no health issue preventing standing, and the person is able to stand during the prayer, they should stand at the beginning of each rak’ah for qiyam.
For those who cannot stand due to health problems, it is permissible to pray while sitting on a chair, and the movements (rukun) of the prayer are performed with gestures (ima), without physically standing.
